Mark Amfahr Consist Collection

Mark has assembled a collection of train consists from various sources and has graciously offered to share them. He has hundreds of Union Pacific lists from the late 1970s into the early 1980s, mostly eastbound run through trains from North Platte for the CNW. Another couple hundred lists are from the UP in southern California in 1966. A few Milwaukee Road lists from the 1960’s – 1970’s round out his collection.

If you have a particular interest in any of these consists, contact us and we’ll scan them as time permits. Below is a partial inventory of his collection.

Yermo Westbounds in 1966

These lists were handwritten by the conductors for the trains as they operated from Yermo to East Yard in Los Angeles. They were given to the clerks at ELA to allow the switch engines to immediately go to work on the trains, delivering cars to connections, TOFC ramp, freight houses, etc. on tight schedule connections.

The lists show three basic westbound train types: “Forwarder” trains, the BDS (officially the “Blue Diamond Special”, low priority Las Vegas to ELA), and the IMS (the “Intermountain Shorts”, low priority drag, SLC to ELA). The Forwarder trains handle priority loaded cars from various eastern connections (origination shown in the symbols) such as CNW, CB&Q, MILW, Council Bluffs yard, Kansas City yard, etc. One of them is also handling livestock out of SLC/Ogden so it has the DLS (Day Livestock) symbol included.  The number at the end is the date the train was schedule to depart its initial terminal (not Yermo, but each train’s UP origin, i.e., Council Bluffs, etc).

These lists are from Eugene Crowner’s collection.
