The Canadian National Railways Historical Association’s magazine CN Lines Volume 17 Number 4 has an excellent article summarizing New England freight train operations over the decades.  Volume 13 Number 3 also has a good article about operations in Hamilton in the 1970’s.

Ian Wilson’s Steam series provides comprehensive information about freight operations in the 1950’s in the areas covered by his books.

Traingeek.ca has a collection of car control manuals which include customer information and some train blocking instructions.  There are employee timetables available as well.
